San Joaquin County ready for prison changes |

STOCKTON CA - San Joaquin County is ready to assume charge of lower-level state prison inmates, even as uncertainty looms over future funding needed to house the additional jail population and new services to would-be parolees. California's prison realignment - a strategy to downsize its inmate numbers, save money and reduce recidivism rates - calls for the state's 58 counties to take non-violent prisoners, drug offenders and thieves. Courthouses throughout the state are set for the new sentencing process that starts today. The change became effective over the weekend. County authorities are concerned about their ability to carry on that job after the fiscal year ends, since Gov. Jerry Brown has yet to secure constitutional changes that will provide ongoing funding. A one-time $7.7 million lump sum goes to San Joaquin County for the responsibility until July. The switch is expected to add 221 more jail inmates to the San Joaquin County Jail over a nine-month period and 522 to the county probation program. Authorities, however, want to dispel beliefs that the county is suddenly receiving a busload of convicted felons. "No, we are not getting inmates back from the state prison system," San Joaquin County Sheriff Steve Moore said. "There will not be the green bus from the (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation) pulling up here into San Joaquin County and kicking out all these inmates. Read More. |
