Hunger Strike at Calif. Prisons Swells to 12,000 Inmates |

A hunger strike conducted by California prison inmates has swelled to 12,000 participants, advocates for the inmates tell the Los Angeles Times. State corrections officials, however, tell the Times that the number of striking inmates is far lower than that. As of Monday, officials said there were only 1,245 inmates at four prisons who have missed nine or more consecutive meals since Sept. 26. The number of inmates who had missed nine or more consecutive meals peaked Sept. 29 with 4,252 inmates at eight state prisons. As of Monday, the inmates were on day eight of a renewed hunger strike after the previous strike in July was suspended. The most recent strike was started to call attention to prison conditions, including lengthy periods in solitary confinement.
