Supervisors OK jail realignment proposal |

The Merced County Board of Supervisors gave a unanimous thumbs-up Tuesday to an implementation plan geared toward bringing the state's jail realignment law into effect locally. Prepared by county department heads and local law enforcement, the Adult Realignment Implementation Plan is a road map for the county to conform with the terms of Assembly Bill 109, which went into effect Saturday. The law emerged from a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling ordering California officials to cut the state prison population by more than 30,000 inmates. Supporters of the law, including Gov. Jerry Brown, said it mandates that low-level state prison inmates sentenced for nonserious, nonviolent crimes and low-risk sex offenses after Oct. 1 serve their sentences in county jails instead of state prisons.
