WY DOC: Training Academy graduates third class of the year

Cheyenne – The Wyoming Department of Corrections Training Academy graduated its third class of the calendar year on Sept. 16 Director, Bob Lampert announced.

The class included a total of 52 students, 31 uniform staff and 21 non-uniform staff from the five correctional institutions in Wyoming. Those staff will now return to their job duties at their various institutions.

The breakdown by institution of the academy students is as follows:

Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution, Torrington – 10 uniform and 14 non-uniform staff
Wyoming State Penitentiary, Rawlins – 15 uniform staff and 5 non-uniform staff
Wyoming Women’s’ Center, Lusk – 3 uniform staff and 1 non-uniform staff
Wyoming Honor Farm, Riverton - 2 uniform staff and 1 non-uniform staff
Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp, Newcastle – 1 uniform staff

“The field of corrections continues to be a strong area for jobs availability, whether as a correctional officer or working in one of the many programs in our institutions,” Lampert said. “It provides stable employment with excellent benefits, plus it offers good opportunities for advancement in a variety of career fields.”

The next academy will start on Oct. 10. The academy is offered four times throughout the year for staff and officers who need the training.

The Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified basic training academy is ten weeks of intense curriculum and includes one week of job shadowing. All staff members new to the department participate in the first week of training.

All new staff hired to work at one of the institutions attend the first five weeks, which include extensive training in communications skills and de-escalation techniques such as verbal judo and motivational interviewing (a verbal technique proven to promote positive behavioral change in offenders).

Correctional Officers continue their training for the second five weeks with subjects such as Wyoming case law, WDOC policies and procedures, report writing, ethics, and managing inmate behavior. All staff members receive staff safety training and tactics training as well.

The academy is located at Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins. It provides training for the department and consists of a training manager, six full-time trainers, and an administrative assistant.
