A second round of inmate protests continued across seven state prisons in California on Wednesday. At Pelican Bay State Prison, 232 inmates were considered to be on a hunger strike. Statewide, there were 908. The latest hunger strike was initiated Sept. 26 by prisoners alleging bad-faith negotiations by the state after a July hunger strike, retaliations for participating in the first protest and an inability to receive certain personal items. “The leadership of the strike is still coming from Pelican Bay,” said Isaac Ontiveros, communications director for Critical Resistance, a prisoner rights advocacy group.
