A man who walked away from what is now Territorial Correctional Facility in 1975 was sentenced Thursday to 16 years in the Department of Corrections.

Robert Charles Johnson, 60, was convicted on the escape charge in June. He faced a sentencing range of eight to 24 years.

Johnson, who had been convicted of second-degree murder in 1973, was arrested in Nevada in 2007 while living under the name Robert Neal Fargo.

"The claim that he continues to make that he was living a law-abiding life (is false)," said Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia. "What he was doing was living a law-avoiding life."

He said Johnson spent 32 years "living a lie," using a false name and false Social Security number to avoid detection by law enforcement.

"Escape by its very nature is escaping responsibility for what he's done," said Pirraglia, who asked for the full 24-year sentence.
