So-Called 'Ninja Bandit' Wins Lawsuit

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A former Albuquerque Police Department officer convicted of murder and bank robberies sued the state and won. Now, taxpayers will front the bill for the alleged incident that authorities said the prisoner might have provoked.

Matt Griffin claims New Mexico Department of Corrections prison guards beat him up after a fight they said he started, and Griffin just won a lawsuit over the situation.

The state has not said how much taxpayers are shelling out, but officials said settling the suit was in the public's best interest

The former APD officer and convicted murderer acted as his own lawyer behind bars when he sued the New Mexico Department of Corrections and won. His lawsuit claimed prison guards at the state penitentiary in Santa Fe beat him up during a fight

The state's lawyer said Griffin started the fight when he pulled out a razor blade and slashed a guard in the face.

"The reason that we settled the lawsuit is that it was a reasonable business decision," said state attorney Jim Brewster.
