DEDHAM, MA, Oct. 11, 2011 -- Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti is pleased to announce that the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office has received a second year of federal grant funding in the amount of $335,000 for its innovative inmate reentry programming. “We’re delighted that the U.S. Department of Justice has reviewed our reentry programs and found them worthy of continued support,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “One of the best ways to cut crime and eliminate the revolving door cycle in our jails is to focus on changing the outlook of offenders while they are inmates here.” The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) was one of only 13 correctional agencies in the nation to receive the initial Second Chance Act demonstration grant for $335,000 last year. This latest action continues the funding for another year after Justice Department officials reviewed the NCSO reentry programs. The funding will be used to pay for programs for inmates with substance abuse and impulsive behavior issues in addition to programs that help inmates link up with community agencies to continue their positive progression after their release from jail. Sheriff Bellotti has given top priority status to his comprehensive inmate reentry programming, which begins assessing and addressing offenders’ behavioral deficiencies from the first day they enter the jail. “Since virtually all of our inmates at the Dedham House of Correction eventually return to our communities, it is imperative that we address the shortcomings that led to their committing crimes in the first place,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “In this way, we increase public safety by reducing crime while simultaneously giving these offenders the opportunity to be productive citizens for themselves and their families.” |
