Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral was recently named as the recipient of the 8th Annual Michael A. Tye Leadership Award during Fenway Health's 2011 Donor Appreciation Night, held at Fenway's Ansin Building. Honored for exhibiting many of the attributes embodied by the award's namesake - former Fenway Health Board of Directors member and noted philanthropist Michael A. Tye - award recipients are noted for their exemplary leadership and spirited service on behalf of Fenway's mission and the community it serves. During a short program, Fenway Health's leadership donors were recognized before the presentation of the award to Sheriff Cabral, whom Fenway officials stated "has been an actively engaged public supporter, donor and advocate of Fenway Health for more than two decades. She is a member of Fenway's Board of Visitors, served as a 2011 Women's Dinner Party chair, and has worked with Fenway's Violence Recovery Program (formerly the Victim Recovery Program) since 1988, when she was an assistant district attorney in Middlesex County prosecuting hate crimes." Reflecting upon the person for whom the award is named and the organization from which it comes, Sheriff Cabral spoke about the deep personal meaning of the event. "I am greatly honored to be chosen to receive this award," said Sheriff Cabral. "Michael Tye was one of Fenway's staunchest advocates. Among many other accomplishments, Michael created the "Harbor To The Bay" bike ride that has raised over $2 million dollars for 4 different AIDS/HIV charities." "I have worked with and supported the Fenway for nearly 20 years," Sheriff Cabral continued. "Without their Victim Recovery Program, many, many victims of crime would never have felt empowered to participate in the criminal justice process and hold their perpetrators accountable " For nearly forty years, Fenway Health has been working to make life healthier for the people of the neighborhood it serves - the LGBT community, people living with HIV/AIDS and the broader population. The Fenway Institute at Fenway Health is an interdisciplinary center for research, training, education and policy development focusing on national and international health issues. |
