Due to long solitary confinement, inmates have been on a hunger strike in order to be rewarded with less time in their jail cells and more time with other inmates.

This strike is going on in eight different prisons and the strike is estimated to have approximately 12,000 inmates involved. According to CNN, the California Department of Corrections is putting many inmates in correctional facilities, in response to the disturbance of the hunger strike. Also, prison officials said they would be punishing the inmates who are refusing to eat meals by taking them out of the general population and placing them in administrative segregation units. The prison officials are saying that by putting them in these units, it will make the prison safer because it allows guards to deal with gang violence more easily.

The spokesman for the strike was asked about the purpose of it and why their plans should be accepted. Isaac Ontiveros talked about the prisoners’ need to be respected and that many inmates have been in jail for 20 years and all they want is for their conditions to be changed and for them to be respected.
