Forgery ring taps Ellis County Jail's bank account

WAXAHACHIE, Texas — The latest criminal case under investigation at the Ellis County Sheriff's Office has even experienced deputies shaking their heads.

"I have never seen someone actually use the Sheriff's Office, or a law enforcement agency's checking account, to commit forgeries," said Lt. Jason Westmoreland.

This case began in August when Ellis County's jail started getting collection letters accusing it of issuing bad checks.

Deputies said they think a former inmate — who remains at large — stole the jail's account number from a check he received for leftover commissary funds when he was released.

Investigators said that individual is part of a forgery ring that counterfeited and cashed 27 checks this summer — worth more than $13,000 — using the jail's bank account.

But as deputies began looking into their own case, they soon discovered more.

During a search warrant issued on James Criss' home on Tuesday morning, investigators confiscated computers, scanners and printers, along with hundreds of other fake payroll checks, including some from popular restaurants like Chili's, Subway, and Pizza Hut.
