Prison release of Macomb County child molester halted |

Macomb County authorities have halted, at least temporarily, the planned release from prison of a man convicted in 2003 of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl. Clarke Strohm, 50, is serving a 5-30-year sentence for first-degree criminal sexual conduct of a child younger than 13, but the state parole board has approved him for release. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office contends that Strohm is a danger to society and notes that at the time of his trial he threatened to kill county Prosecutor Eric Smith, who was then heading the office’s sex crimes unit; trial Judge Antonio Viviano; and a woman connected to the case. On Tuesday, Macomb County Circuit Court Judge James Biernat Jr. approved a request from prosecutors to appeal the parole board’s decision to release Strohm and granted a stay that will keep him in prison while the case is pending. The Prosecutor’s Office is also seeking to have e-mails Strohm might have generated while in prison sent to the judge for review, but, according to Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor Kerry Ange, the assistant attorney general representing the parole board plans to fight that.
