Agents with the Alabama Department of Corrections have arrested a correctional officer on suspicion of trying to smuggle drugs and cellphones into Staton Correctional Facility in Elmore.

Leonard Purter, 34, has resigned and was taken to the Elmore County Jail after his ar rest Sunday, said Brian Corbett, a Department of Corrections spokesman.

The department charged Purter with first-degree possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and tampering with evidence, district attorney Randall Houston said.

It was not confirmed why Purter was charged with tampering, but a court deposition alleges that Purter attempted to hide a bag containing the contraband.

The deposition indicates that Purter is accused of possessing 8 ounces of marijuana, 173 pills and 14 cellphones with batteries and chargers.

Purter was being held on a total of $36,000 bond and was released from jail Tuesday. Houston said he was not yet sure whether his office would pursue further charges against him.
