Teamsters file wage-and-hour complaint for prison guards

Three prison officers and a leader of the Teamsters Union on Thursday accused Florida's prison system of cheating employees out of up to 200 hours of wages per year and asked the U.S. Department of Labor to make the Department of Corrections let the officers clock them in before going through long daily security checks.

The head of the Florida Police Benevolent Association, which represents prison employees, called the Teamsters complaint a ploy in a hot union-representation campaign between the two organizations.

A Department of Corrections spokeswoman said the agency has not yet seen the Teamsters complaint.

Aaron Cobb, an officer at Union Correctional Institution, and Allen Nipper, a sergeant at the reception and medical center in Lake Butler, said it can sometimes take 15 to 30 minutes for officers to go through multiple gates in small groups, step through metal detectors and perhaps be patted down in a search for weapons or drugs. Then they pick up their chemical spray and safety vests and often have to walk several minutes to their assigned duty station before they can punch the time clock and start getting paid.
