WYOMING — Claiming a fiscal imposition, Wyoming police are pushing for restrictions on parolees living in the city. The city’s Planning Commission on Tuesday will consider a zoning proposal that would permit residences of two or more parolees only in industrial districts. If approved, the ordinance might prevent the state from housing parolees in a 28th Street motel where they now are placed. “We feel we have a bit of a target on our back,” city planner Tim Cochran said. “We’re concerned about the impact (these parolees) may have on our image.” Wyoming also has a financial argument, because the city is forced to monitor the parolees — and register the sex offenders among them, for example — without compensation from the state. The result is local resources spent on a population artificial to Wyoming. City officials say there is talk of establishing another group residence for parolees in Wyoming, and they want to nip that in the bud. City police already monitor more than 200 active parolees, Police Chief James Carmody said. For the sex offenders, required registration takes 30 to 60 minutes each, up to four times per year, he said. “They continue to burden local law enforcement and provide no resources to assist us,” Carmody said. “We need to put some controls on it.” Read More. |
