DEDHAM, MA, Oct. 18, 2011 – In his continuing effort to increase public safety by reducing the chances that inmates will reoffend when they leave jail, Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti has begun a new cycle of vocational training at the Norfolk County Correctional Center. “In this fiscal climate of limited resources, the only legitimate reason to offer programming to inmates is to prevent them from reoffending when they finish serving their sentences,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “Unfortunately, many of these men enter our correctional facility with very little in the way of job skills. By giving them the chance to learn a skill, we can change their outlook and provide them with the tangible tools to succeed as a law-abiding citizen.” The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office allows inmates to earn the chance to be trained in programs such as culinary arts, baking, heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), and landscaping. In certain instances, the inmates can attain professional certificates that jump-start their efforts to find employment when they leave the jail. Sheriff Bellotti also provides classes to prepare for the high school diploma equivalency (GED) test because the lack of a diploma is often a roadblock to employment. “Our goal is to give these men a sense of responsibility and keep them on the right path when they return to their communities -- which are our communities as well,” Sheriff Bellotti said. |
