Fewer people were sent to prison in Florida last year, and the number of people who returned to prison also declined. Those were the findings of a report that the Florida Department of Corrections plans to release later this month. According to the report, completed by the department's Bureau of Research and Data Analysis, the number of people admitted to the state prison system declined from 39,907 in 2007 to 35,721 in 2010. Florida's Criminal Justice Estimating Conference is projecting that the downward trend in prison admissions will continue for at least two more years. The prison system's report also found that the recidivism rate is down from 34 percent to 30 percent. Researchers said recidivism is determined by calculating how many inmates return to prison within three years of being released. Read More. |
