NM - Each year, $300 million of New Mexicans taxpayer dollars are spent on inmates at New Mexico's nine prisons. Prison officials are conducting a statewide lockdown of the prison system this week to document a system-wide security assessment, taking a hard look at each of the state's prisons. "Our absolute goal is to understand our inherent strengths and weaknesses from a security perspective," said Gregg Marcantel of the Department of Corrections. Officials have already spent eight days locking down the prisons for hours at a time, going cell by cell, fence by fence and combing every inch to test security. "We're looking for trends, we're looking for any areas of our facilities from a physical security standpoint that may have compromised that needs to be addressed," Marcantel explained.
