Indianapolis IN -- It was a creative plan. Bust a small hole in a jailhouse window; have a girlfriend smuggle in three hacksaws on a long string made of bathroom towels; carve through four cellblock bars, then another bar on the window; shatter the bullet-resistant glass with a crossbeam torn from an inmate's bed; then jump 25 feet to freedom. And it almost worked. The Marion County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday it thwarted a plan by three murder suspects and another inmate to escape the county jail at 40 S. Alabama St. The inmates, who had been in a common holding area, have been moved to separate cells, jail spokesman Julio Fernandez said. Fernandez said no procedural changes are planned. "Things like this happen once in a while," he said. "But we're pretty good at catching them because of the procedures that we have in place." Jail Commander Lt. Col. Gary Tingle said the inmates used the 12-inch hacksaw blades to cut a jail bar and were working on the window when turnkeys discovered the plot Tuesday morning. "If they sawed that bar off the window, they were going to use the bunk bed piece as a crowbar to try to break the window," Tingle said. Investigators said the hacksaws probably entered the cellblock -- which houses 25 violent offenders in one common area -- three weeks ago through the same window. The window was broken Sept. 26, and deputies arrested a woman they suspected of trying to smuggle in marijuana and tobacco. They now think she had sent up the hacksaws before she was nabbed.
