Outrage: 49 exotic animals dead in Ohio; officials say ‘it had to be done’ |

The hunt in northeast Ohio is over. Armed with assault rifles, the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Department bagged a total of 49 of 56 irreplaceable exotic animals, including 18Bengal tigers—a vanishing breed. No word yet on whether the deputies will get to keep their “trophies.” The one remaining animal on the loose is a monkey, which is believed dead—possibly eaten by one of the larger animals that escaped when the owner of an area animal preserve opened the cages late Monday before killing himself. In the end, only six animals were taken alive. All have been transported to the Columbus Zoo. In addition to the Bengal tigers, sheriff’s deputies killed 17 lions, eight bears, and a wolf.
