Exotic animal sanctuary causes concern

MAPLE VALLEY TWP. -- Chuck Vanneste said the killing of dozens of wild animals Wednesday in Ohio was a tragedy, but it's not something he ever expects to have to face with his exotic animal sanctuary in Sanilac County's Maple Valley Township.

It's also a situation local officials said they don't have a response plan for.

Deputies shot and killed 48 animals, including 18 Bengal tigers and 17 lions, on Wednesday in Zanesville, Ohio after the owner of the sanctuary freed them before killing himself.

Vanneste said while he hated to see it, he understands why the animals were destroyed.

"It's a shame they had to be killed, but they didn't have any other choice under those circumstances," said Vanneste.

Vanneste started Summer Wind Farms Sanctuary about two decades ago and has about 200 animals, including tigers, lions, bears, monkeys and reptiles on 140 acres.

An animal escape has never been a concern, he said.
