TARPON SPRINGS, Florida-- Two inmates escaped from a Florida Department of Corrections facility in Tarpon Springs over the weekend in two separate incidents. Both turned themselves in to police on Monday morning, but the escapes are raising questions about security. 10 News found out it happens dozens of times each year, potentially costing taxpayers thousands of dollars. At the Work Release Center in Tarpon, there's no big fence, barbed wire or heavy presence of armed guards. The inmates are all felons nearing their release and working regular jobs to help them transition back into the community. But this weekend, Levar Murray, convicted on drug charges, ran right out of the building and escaped. Not just for me, for everybody," said Gabriel Hernandez, who lives nearby and is the father of a 4-year-old girl. Records show about 13 inmates a month escape from the state's work release centers. That includes Williams own brother, Donald, who escaped in April and still hasn't been found. "If you look at it statistically, it seems like it's very often. But almost always we get them back within a few hours, or certainly within 24 hours," said Jo Ellyn Rackleff, a spokesperson for the Florida Department of Corrections. Read More. |
