Officials grilled at hearing on Logan prison closure

LINCOLN IL — If Gov. Pat Quinn’s decision to close Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln is based on economics, Lincoln Mayor Keith Snyder doesn’t understand.

“The state would save $1 per resident every year, but it would mean a loss of $8 per resident taken out of the Logan County economy,” he said. “To me, that doesn’t make sense.”

Snyder was one of about 50 people who spoke against the proposed plan Wednesday at a Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability public hearing at Lincoln Christian University.

Elected state officials, prison workers, business leaders and residents of Logan County questioned a panel that included representatives from the governor’s office and the Illinois Department of Corrections.

“I would prefer to keep this facility open,” said IDOC Director Salvador Godinez. “I am unfortunately faced with a difficult decision, and this was a painful decision.”
