A 20-year-old Shelby County (Ala.) Jail inmate whose family questioned whether he received timely treatment after a fight has died. Clint Arlow Morris died Monday at UAB Hospital, the Shelby County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday. District Attorney Robby Owens said he has asked the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to perform on autopsy on Morris. The district attorney's office and the Sheriff's Department will investigate the circumstances surrounding Morris' death, and their findings will be presented to a Shelby County grand jury, Owens said. "The Morris family has many members in Shelby County, and our heartfelt sympathy and prayers go out to all of them in the loss of this young man," Sheriff Chris Curry said Tuesday in a prepared statement. Efforts to reach Morris' family for comment were unsuccessful. Morris spent three weeks in UAB Hospital before he died. He was transferred there from Baptist Shelby Hospital, where he was taken by sheriff's officials July 25. The inmate was admitted to the hospital one day after being examined by medical staff at the jail. He had complained of pain and swelling in his neck. A week earlier, Morris was involved in a fight with a fellow inmate. The fight occurred one day after Morris was booked into jail July 17 on a charge of failure to appear in court on various traffic charges. Before his death, Morris' family questioned why he did not receive medical attention until a week after the fight. The Sheriff's Department has said in a prepared statement that Morris and the inmate with whom he fought both refused treatment following a fight that jail officials did not deem serious. The department said Morris was examined twice by medical staff after the fight. |
