Prison board agrees to arm guards |

SOMERSET -— PA Corrections officers at the Somerset County Jail will soon carry firearms under specific circumstances. Warden Gregory Briggs said sheriff's deputies who are certified instructors will train the corrections officers, who will be armed at times when escorting inmates in public. The officers currently do not carry firearms, but carry electroshock weapons and chemical spray. "COs do need to be armed at times, depending on the status of the inmate," he said. "It is for the protection of the public." The policy to allow the officers to carry firearms is being finalized. The prison board voted to approve the policy upon completion. The board approved a treatment policy that it is now mandated to have in place. It explains what programs are available to help reduce the number of inmates who re-offend after they are released from jail. A mandated orientation policy was also approved. That policy, to be given to inmates, explains jail procedures. District Attorney Jerry Spangler said the county received its first bill for reimbursement to the state for the cost of the Department of Corrections transporting inmates to the nearest state prison for county court hearings. The bill for 2,000 miles was for $328, which is 16 cents a mile. Read More. |
