AUGUSTA, Maine -- A Maine inmate being held at a New Jersey prison was found dead in his single cell on Thursday morning. Michael Chasse, 33, was serving sentences on a number of charges, with the most recent one being a 40-year jail sentence after his conviction on two counts of kidnapping for taking hostages at the state prison in 2008, said Judy Plummer, public affairs coordinator for the Maine Department of Corrections. Chasse surrendered after taking a librarian and another prisoner hostage. Chasse was transferred to the Trenton, N.J. prison in January 2011, Plummer said.
