BRIDGETON — Republican candidate for sheriff Michael Barruzza proposes Cumberland County slash three high-level positions in its quest to restrain spending.

Barruzza believes the county sheriff should oversee the Cumberland County Department of Corrections and 9-1-1 Emergency Communications Center and Office of Emergency Management. The county could then cut the job of warden, who oversees the Cumberland County Jail and Juvenile Detention Center. It also could eliminate the position of the public safety director, who oversees the 9-1-1 Center and OEM, in addition to his assistant.

Barruzza faces Democrat and current Sheriff Robert Austino in the election.

If the county cuts the three positions and a chief warrant officer position in the Sheriff’s Office, it would save $214,000 in salary and benefits in one year, Barruzza argues.

He said sheriffs in Cape May and Salem counties oversee their jails.

Cumberland County’s Department of Corrections was under control of the sheriff until 1996 when a warden took it over, Barruzza said.
