Milford (November 10, 2011)—The Massachusetts Department of Correction distributes newly refurbished computers through its Computers for Schools Program by delivering 30 PCs and laptops to the Franklin D. Roosevelt School on November 14 at 10am. WHERE: Franklin D. Roosevelt School, 95 Needham Road, Hyde Park 02136 WHEN: Monday, November 14 at 10am WHO: Sandra McCroom, Undersecretary for Criminal Justice, Executive Office of Public Safety and Security - Luis S. Spencer, Commissioner, Mass. Dept. of Correction - Veronica M. Madden, DOC Director of Inmate Training & Education - Emily Glasgow, Principal, Franklin D. Roosevelt School - 22 second grade students BACKGROUND: The Computers for Schools Program trains inmates to upgrade computers that are donated by large corporations and businesses. The largest donation received since the Computers for Schools Program began in 1997 was when the Massachusetts Trial Court donated 1,200 computers when it upgraded its system. With this donation, the DOC Computers for Schools Program has donated approximately 3,935 computers to classrooms throughout the Commonwealth since 1997. The restorations involve the conversion of computers with Pentium 4 processors. DOC provides the CPU, monitor, keyboard and mouse. At an estimated cost of $200-$250 for a refurbished computer, this program has saved school districts between $787,000 to $983,750. |
