SHERIFF BELLOTTI LINKS VETS AGENCIES WITH INMATES

DEDHAM, Nov. 14, 2011 – Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti recently addressed a group of approximately 35 inmates who also are veterans during a workshop at which veterans service agencies came into the Norfolk County Correctional Center to tell the inmates about counseling and services available to them upon their return to society.

“You all served your country, something a lot of other people haven’t done. That should be recognized,” Sheriff Bellotti told the inmates at the workshop attended by 11 representatives of federal, state and local agencies dedicated to helping vets get health care, housing, employment and any special treatment they may need.

Among the representatives was an employee of Manet Community Health Center in Quincy who also is an Iraq native. He told the vets: “Thank you. I am free because of you guys.”

Other veterans agencies that attended the workshop included the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Massachusetts Veterans Services, the Division of Employment and Training, Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission and the Veterans Justice Outreach Program.

The common goal of the agency representatives was to help the veterans once they are released from jail. Each agency was given the opportunity to address the group of inmate vets and explain the services they provide. A second portion of the workshop allowed the vets to go around to the various presenters’ tables to ask questions and seek further information.

“One of our chief missions at the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office is to prepare our inmates to reenter our communities after they serve their jail sentences. We want them to become responsible, law-abiding members of society,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “Through their military service, these veterans helped preserve and maintain our way of life in this country. They have earned the help they are receiving.”
