Berlin NH prison To be Funded
By PAUL FEELY , New Hampshire Union Leader
Published: 11/17/2011

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N,H,, said she expects a bill that will provide funding to staff and open the Berlin prison will be signed by President Obama by the end of this week.

“It’s moving, because an agreement has been reached by the House and Senate on a bill that would provide the funding,” Shaheen said Wednesday.

Shaheen said the eventual opening of the Berlin prison would help provide economic relief and an anticipated 332 jobs to one of the most cash-strapped regions of the state — a $40 million-a-year economic shot in the arm.

“That’s not just jobs, that also reflects money for businesses in the area whose goods and services will be purchased by the prison,” said Shaheen. “This is excellent news for the North Country and New Hampshire. I was glad to see the way Congress is coming together in a bipartisan manner to pass this bill and get people back to work in New Hampshire.”

Shaheen said prison officials have told her they are ready to begin the hiring process within a few weeks of Obama signing the bill — meaning that if he puts pen to paper by this Saturday, jobs could possibly be posted before the end of this year.

“I am very happy about the future of Berlin and there is definitely a positive feeling in our city now, and Sen. Shaheen really helped create this headwind,” Berlin Mayor Paul Grenier said. “We would not be here without her help on a number of Berlin and North Country projects — this being the biggest one of all.”

The 1,280-bed, medium-security federal prison was completed in 2010, at a total cost of $276 million.

The completed prison has sat vacant since its completion last year because of budget cuts.

The funds for the Berlin prison are included in the final version of the 2012 Commerce, Justice and Science appropriations bill, which includes $6.5 billion in funding for the Bureau of Prisons.

That bill passed the Senate on a 69-30 vote, and language that addresses the Berlin prison situation was included in a House version that passed committee.
