Prisoners' carvings welcomed by hospice

Three carvings by artists in prison have found a new home at North Shore Hospice.

They were handed over to hospice at a ceremony at Auckland Prison in Paremoremo in August and then unveiled at hospice during a dawn ceremony on November 21.

Illustrating the four aspects of Maori health, the artworks were created for the hospice by a carving group through the Artists in Prisons programme and the Corrections Department.

One carving has been installed in the front garden surrounded by native plants, another has been placed over the entranceway and a painting hangs in the reception area.

North Shore Hospice chief executive Mike Franklin says they symbolise the four aspects of Maori health – spiritual, mental, physical and social.

Hospice isn't traditionally a place Maori would choose to go to – instead choosing to be with family or back in their home town, he says.
