Pine Bluff, Ark. (KTHV) -- Arkansas Department of Corrections Director Ray Hobbs will be suspended for two weeks without pay due to a communication error with the prison board. Hobbs will begin his suspension on January 2, 2012 for two weeks and will then be on probation for six months. Hobbs is being suspended because he didn't tell the board up front about that computer glitch and the board let some inmates go early. Now the board and DOC are working together to make sure it doesn't happen again. When it comes to technology, the good often comes with the bad. Sometimes a small programming error can cause a major problem. And that's exactly what happened at the Arkansas Department of Correction. "The first time that we got any inclination that there was a problem was September 28. Then by October 5 they had a pretty good handle on what was going on with the computer," says Dinah Tyler, spokesperson for the Arkansas DOC. Tyler says a computer glitch altered the amount of good-time some inmates earned. But, according to state law, no inmate can receive more good time than 50% of their sentence. "There's supposed to be a cap in the computer that would kick in any time they got above 50% and say 'no more.' And that cap, though it was there, wasn't being used," says Tyler. Read More. |
