OCALA – A former state corrections officer accused of severely beating an inmate several months ago in Lake County was arrested Wednesday in Marion County on a warrant for the alleged incident.

Brad Heilman was arrested at his Summerfield home by a Florida Department of Law Enforcement agent and was taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was charged with aggravated battery great bodily harm.

Heilman was booked at the facility at 10:45 p.m. and was released at 1:02 a.m. on $5,000 bond.

Walter Forgie, a prosecutor with the Lake County State Attorney’s Office, said Thursday that Heilman was a corrections officer at Lake Correctional Institution at the time of the Aug. 27 incident.

While Forgie referred details of the case to the FDLE, the agency that investigated the case, he did say that an inmate at the institution, Duane Royster, suffered multiple facial fractures and called Heilman’s use of force “inappropriate.”
