PITTSBURGH—The U.S. Department of Justice announced Thursday it has begun civil investigations of two state correctional institutions in western Pennsylvania. The department said in a statement that it is investigating allegations that the state correctional facility in Pittsburgh failed to adequately protect prisoners from harm and that officers targeted prisoners for violence and other abuse based on race, sexual orientation, gender identity or other status. The department also is investigating allegations that the Cresson corrections facility provided inadequate care to prisoners who have mental illness, failed to adequately protect such prisoners from harm, and subjected them to excessive periods of isolation, the federal agency said. Several former guards at the Pittsburgh prison have been arrested and charged with abuse in separate investigations, and inmates have also filed two civil rights lawsuits. The DOJ investigation is separate from those. The DOJ investigation will include visits to the prisons, a records review, and interviews with corrections officials, community members, prisoners and their families. Read More. |
