Nashville TN -- The holiday season is a time for giving, and for the men involved with the Building from the Heart program at Nashville's Metro-Davidson County Detention Facility, this season holds special importance for them: It's the first time their custom-made dollhouses are being delivered to local children to enjoy for the holidays. Originally conceived by Yolanda Pittman, chief of security at the Metro facility, the Building from the Heart program has been a huge success. Just one year after Pittman saw the potential for creativity and construction during a 2010 holiday decoration competition among inmates, six dollhouses will be delivered on Friday, December 16, to the following Nashville-area non-profits and organizations that support children in need:
With such support and dedication, Building from the Heart is poised to make a big difference not just to the children who receive the dollhouses, but for the inmates as well. "I'm not an emotional person, but every time I go in that area and see these guys working together and putting their all into the work and thanking me, it makes me emotional," says Pittman. "I wanted to be able to give them a trade that they could build another life on so they don't come back."81 |
