| A goal met, a success story in state offender mentoring program |

For officials who gathered in Wichita on Tuesday, Tuan Huynh is a face of success – what a person can become after leaving prison, especially when he has the help of a mentor. Chris Hauck, his mentor, is the other half of the equation, part of a Kansas Department of Corrections initiative called Mentoring4Success. The goal of the program is to provide a mentor for every person coming out of prison. The idea is to help offenders become successful as they re-enter society, so they won’t commit new crimes and cost taxpayers more money by being returned to prison. The state has reached a goal of matching 500 mentors with offenders coming out of prison, Kansas Corrections Secretary Ray Roberts announced at Tuesday’s gathering. Roberts credited Gov. Sam Brownback for the program, saying, “This was his vision.” Brownback said the program now needs to go to the next level, so that there is a mentor for every person coming out of prison who wants one. Brownback and Roberts spoke to almost 100 people gathered at the Urban League of Kansas offices near Ninth and Grove. Brownback said the program is not trying to be “soft on crime” but is helping each offender become a “better person” when they come out of prison. He said many offenders have mental problems and said “many are loners” and lack support of family or friends. At a time when a lot of issues divide people, having fewer people commit new crimes after they are released from prison is something everyone can unite around, Brownback said. Brownback called the case of Tuan Huynh (sounds like “Twan Win”) a “gripping and touching” story. After being introduced, Huynh said, “I’m more than honored to be here,” considering his past. As a young man, he had been involved in gangs. He noted that he had spent 15 years in prison before being released in June. Huynh, now 33, entered prison the same year he was supposed to graduate from high school. He struggled while growing up in prison. Read More. |
