Vigilance, not vigilantism |

They are crimes more heinous than all others, the type of offenses that create fear, anger and outrage among the public, and understandably so. Sexual offenses, particularly those against defenseless children, are horrific, barbaric acts and perpetrators deserve to be dealt with harshly. They deserve justice, as everyone does under the color of law, and its application applied in the strictest of measures. This disturbing topic has reared its ugly head in recent weeks on a national level due to the flurry of allegations against coaches at Penn State University and Syracuse University. And, the Craig and Moffat County community has been thrown before these issue once again, as well. At the end of last week, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office announced that a community meeting would take place at 6:30 p.m. today at The Center of Craig. There, authorities will present the public with information regarding 49-year-old Dale Matthew Waite, a convicted sex offender who has been designated as a sexually violent predator. Waite, who was paroled Nov. 30 from the Colorado Department of Corrections, is living in Moffat County. The sheriff’s office, as required by law, is fulfilling its obligation to the public to release pertinent information about Waite. Sadly, this isn’t the first time such a meeting has had to happen in our community, and the screams of public outrage have been similarly loud each occasion. Read More. |
