State will crack down on inmate cellphones

Springfield, Ill. — State officials are exploring ways to detect if inmates are using cellphones inside Illinois' nearly 30 prisons.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports (http://bit.ly/vHP5M4) that state officials are worried about inmates who successfully smuggle cellphones into their cells.

They're talking to companies about how much it would cost to install equipment to detect calls being made from inside prison walls.

State Sen. Ira Silverstein has also introduced a bill that would strip inmates of up to 90 days of credit for their sentences if they are found with a cellphone.
