California -- Corrections officials are investigating what led to a prison riot in Folsom that involved 150 inmates, triple the initial estimates.

Prison guards fired seven rounds during the riot Wednesday at California State Prison-Sacramento in Folsom, hitting one inmate, who remains hospitalized, officials said.

Eleven inmates were taken to local hospitals but none were critically injured, officials said. Nine had been treated and released Thursday. In addition to the inmate shot in the leg by a prison guard, a second inmate remains hospitalized with facial injuries and a possible broken shoulder, according to a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation statement.

Both inmates were in stable condition. No prison staff were injured.

Corrections department spokeswoman Dana Toyama said the investigation has not determined what sparked the riot or whether it was pre-planned. California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s (CDCR) Deadly Force Investigations Team is investigating the guards' use of lethal rounds in halting the disturbance.

Officers found five inmate-manufactured weapons after the riot, according to the corrections department.
