Deriek W. Crouse of Christiansburg, VA, was just 39 and a father of five children and stepchildren when a gunman approached Crouse during a traffic stop – in which he was not involved – and shot the officer dead. In addition to hos children, Crouse is survived by his wife, mother and a brother.

The Va. Tech site which released the information said that Crouse joined the campus police force in October 2007, just six months after the infamous mass shooting. He had been a member of the force's Emergency Response Team since February, and in 2008 he received an award for his commitment to the department's efforts against driving under the influence. Crouse was also an army veteran. He chose to work at Va. Tech after stints at the New River Valley Jail and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Department.

University president Charles Steger released a statement in which he expressed the anguish behind this new tragedy. "In light of the turmoil and trauma and the tragedy suffered by this campus by guns, I can only say words don't describe our feelings and they're elusive at this point in time… Our hearts are broken again for the family of our police officer."

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the shooter or his motive for ambushing officer Crouse, but they have provided the media with a timeline of events.
