Franklin County, VA -- Rita Sigmon has been a surveillance probation officer for 11 years, but what she enjoys most is gospel singing and playing piano. For more than two years, Sigmon has served as deputy chief probation and parole officer for the Virginia Department of Corrections' District 37, headquartered in Rocky Mount. She has been with the department since 2000 when she received her bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice at Ferrum College. But she's been singing since she was 8 years old, getting her start at Rev. Bud Nichols' Evangelistic House of Prayer in Ferrum. Along the way, the 1996 graduate of Franklin County High School developed her voice without assistance from a voice coach. Although she has performed at various functions throughout the area, she has never performed professionally. "No, I've never charged anyone to sing," she noted. "One day when I was small, I belted out John Cougar Mellencamp's song 'Jack and Diane' and everyone figured out I could sing," Sigmon said. And thanks to her sister, Lona Greer Watson, who died Dec. 14, 2009, Sigmon taught herself to play the piano after learning the cords from Shirley Allen, a lifelong family friend. Read More. |
