State officials call new state corrections Director Dan Heyns straightforward, transparent, energetic |

Since Michigan Department of Corrections Director Dan Heyns began his tenure, animosity between the department and the Legislature is beginning to disappear. “We have a good guy there. We have faith in what he is doing,” said state Rep. Joe Havemen, R-Holland, chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Corrections. “I think he is gaining our trust.” Haveman’s praise of Heyns is echoed by other state officials, who call Heyns straightforward, energetic and transparent. “He gives me the impression he is willing to listen, which we appreciate,” said Mel Grieshaber, executive director of the Michigan Corrections Organization, the state corrections officers union. Grieshaber, however, said the union still does not know Heyns well. “The jury is still out a little bit.” The organization has concerns budget pressures will cause Heyns to move in directions that might frustrate officers. To the organization cuts to staffing equate cuts to safety, Grieshaber said, but he supports the Heyns’ administration’s effort to flatten management. Read More. |
