TULSA, Okla. — At least five cities have expressed interest in participating in an inmate labor program the Oklahoma Department of Corrections has decided to revive. Budget constraints forced the Corrections Department to cancel a portion of its contract last year with Avalon Correctional Services for housing offenders on public work crews. It has since changed the contract to have the company keep the inmates at a halfway house in Tulsa, Corrections spokesman Jerry Massie told The Associated Press. With its renewal, the program will involve about 40 inmates who would be paid about $2 a day to do landscaping and cleanup tasks, the Tulsa World reported. The city of Jenks used inmates who weren't violent and hadn't committed sexual offenses to supplement its workforce from 2006 to 2009. Jenks and Glenpool already have approved Department of Corrections contracts to restart the program. "We've really missed those people to support us," Jenks Public Works Director Robert Carr said. "There's a lot of competition with other communities for this type program." Carr said Jenks officials hope to get a seven-person crew for about $1,170 a month to help them with grounds and right-of-way maintenance, landscaping and other jobs. The cities of Tulsa, Collinsville and Owasso also are interested in the program. Read More. |
