Prison to close after Pa. inmates are transferred

RICHMOND — The loss of a $20 million annual contract to house nearly 1,000 Pennsylvania inmates will force Virginia to close a rundown prison next year, Gov. Bob McDonnell said Tuesday.

The closure by May of Mecklenburg Correction Center will put at least 150 people out of work. Secretary of Public Safety Marla Graff Decker said the Department of Corrections will work to transfer 45 percent to 50 percent of the prison's 300 employees to vacant positions within the prison system.

Mecklenburg will be the 11th Virginia prison to close since 2009.

The 730 prisoners currently held at the Boydton facility will be transferred to Green Rock Correctional Center in Chatham, which formerly housed only the Pennsylvania prisoners. It will cost the state $10,000 less per year to house each inmate at Green Rock than at Mecklenburg because of the facility's age and maintenance problems, Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor said.
