| Inmate Escapes Custody in Effingham County, Caught after Manhunt |

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, GA -- (Effingham County, GA) A state prisoner who escaped from a work detail Thursday morning has a short taste of freedom. He was caught about two hours later in the woods after the Effingham County Sheriff’s Deputies launched a manhunt that included several agencies and up to 50 law enforcement officers. 21 year old Virgil Elsner found off of Blue Jay Road shortly after 1:00 o'clock in the afternoon. He'd been missing since about 10:30 a.m. Sheriff’s Deputies were notified by the Georgia Department of Corrections that one of their inmates had escaped. Officials immediately set up a perimeter between Highway 17 and Sand Hill Road and down towards Highway 80. The Sheriff’s Office notified the public, neighbors, and placed area schools on lock down following the escape. Over 50 law enforcement officers became involved in the search.
