Inmate access to electronic communications lead to prison violence, more time |

Georgia -- Less than a week ago CBS News reported that crime victims are being "victimized all over again" due to inmates in state prisons having access to electronic communication means such as Facebook. In Georgia this week electronic communication access by inmates has led to two violent altercations within the Georgia Department of Corrections System. Unlike the prisons cited in the CBS story, however, the two prisons in Georgia do not allow cell phone telecommunication access within the prison system's inmates. Inmates in Georgia who have a cell phone in their possession are doing so illegally, as the item is considered contraband (forbidden material). The most recent prison violent altercation took place on Friday, Nov. 25 at Hancock State Prison in Sparta at 8 p.m. and resulted in 12 inmates requiring hospitalization due to injuries, according to the AJC. "The department believes without a doubt that cell phones were used to organize and coordinate the disturbance," a GDC spokeswoman said, adding that "The fight appears to be gang related."
