Ex-Portland cop: Stress led to sex crimes

KENNEWICK, Wash. (AP) — Stress from an on-duty shooting prompted a former Portland, Ore., police officer to start committing sex crimes, he wrote in a letter to Washington prison officials.

Ryan Graichen served as a Portland Officer from 1998 to 2006. In 2000, a 71-year-old lawyer suffering from dementia pointed a shotgun at him, and his partner shot the man dead.

In a 49-page, handwritten letter to the Washington state Department of Corrections, Graichen said he couldn't get the shooting out of his mind, the Tri-City Herald reported (http://bit.ly/u8GpeW ). He became addicted to pornography as he tried to deal with the stress and sleepless nights, and the shooting was the "root cause" of his legal problems, he said.

"It allowed my brain to escape to 'a different world,' and brought my brain and body pleasure, and shut off the daydreams and bad thoughts," he wrote.

Graichen, 36, pleaded guilty in Benton County Superior Court in October to two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and five counts of commercial sex abuse of a minor. The deal calls for prosecutors and defense attorneys to recommend a 10-year prison term when he's sentenced Jan. 27. He admitted paying an underage girl for sex and offering alcohol, marijuana and money to other girls or young couples for sex acts.

He said he pleaded guilty to "honor his late father's request to take responsibility for his actions and so he can see his children again someday."

In an interview as part of the presentencing report, Graichen claimed he already has been punished and "suffered greatly" and shouldn't be locked up with sex offenders because "it makes me sick." Graichen agreed he needs treatment and counseling for his post-traumatic stress disorder, and porn and sex addictions, but said he doesn't consider himself a sex offender.

"Graichen has shown he has total disregard for the laws of society and the safety of the individuals in the community," wrote community corrections officer Katti Foltz, the pre-sentencing report's author. "Graichen can be quoted as stating 'laws are flawed.' "
