A man who pleaded guilty to arson after lighting his divorce papers and using them to set his estranged wife's beauty salon afire was sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison, with 10 of those suspended.

"I don't think I can take a chance on you," Missoula County District Court Judge Dusty Deschamps told Shawn Gawronski, 33. "I've got to err on the side of caution. You do, in my opinion, present a risk to the community and in particular to your family."

In the predawn hours of March 31, Gawronski drove to the Gifted Hands salon in Frenchtown, broke a window, poured in some gasoline and lit a fire that largely destroyed the business. When law enforcement arrived at 3:40 a.m., Gawronski was sitting in his truck, holding a handgun.

Deschamps told him Monday that the presence of a gun - both on the night of the fire and in a previous incident with Gawronski's family - troubled him more than anything else.

"We all read in the newspaper about guys who go nuts and kill their families and themselves," he said. "... That scares me very much."

Gawronski's estranged wife, Jennifer Warner, spoke of an incident on the previous Aug. 2, when her husband pulled a rifle on her. When her 14-year-old son got the gun away from him, Gawronski went and got a .22 rifle, she said.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Patricia Bower told Deschamps that on Thanksgiving, the two boys were thankful that Gawronski didn't know where they lived and that their mother was OK.
