For the 12th straight year, the employees of the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office have reached deep into their Santa gift bag to make sure that Christmas morning is a happy one for more than 50 kids in the South Shore area. Each year, the Braintree-based Dianne DeVanna Center, which helps at-risk families, sends a Christmas wish list to the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office. The list contains the names and ages of youngsters served by the center. Beside each child’s name is the gift they hope Santa will bring them on Christmas day. The list is posted at the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office right after Thanksgiving, and staffers sign up to fulfill the various youngsters’ wishes. “All the children are chosen in a matter of hours,” Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti said. “The DeVanna gift drive truly is a favorite among the employees. They deserve all the credit for making Christmas day happy and wonderful for kids who are less fortunate.” During the 12 years that the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office has been involved with the DeVanna Center, approximately 600 kids have awakened on Christmas morning to find their favorite toy under the tree. The total cost of gifts purchased during that period is estimated at $30,000. “However, that kind of happiness is priceless,” Sheriff Bellotti said. ”In the spirit of the season, I’d like to thank everyone – in all the organizations and agencies throughout Norfolk County – who give of themselves to make this such a great time of the year.” |
