State to reform prisoner treatment |

LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) - As the result of a lawsuit, the state Department of Corrections has agreed to make some major changes to how they'll treat mentally disabled prisoners. The changes are expected to cost the state about $5.6 million dollars a year. This all goes back to 2007. That's when the Disability Law Center sued the state Department of Corrections, alleging cruel and unusual punishment of mentally disabled prisoners. The suit claims prisoners who didn't follow the rules were forced to spend up to 23 hours a day in total isolation, surrounded by solid concrete walls with only a metal slot in the door to receive food.
